"Is it still a special date to you?"
Yes... "What does it mean?" It means I'm in trouble if I forget it, it's my wedding anniversary. $id Watch out for drunken squirrels |

Doesn't really mean much to me anymore other than the fact the work parties I get involved with in the 'close' season come to an end. We always use to have a special opening night where the bailiffs and work party volunteers got first dibs on the swims with a nice little bbq prior but they are long gone..... |

I'm making more of an effort to acknowledge the 16th. Even though it does have less significance nowadays it would be nice to think that as anglers we
could still celebrate what was the start of the season.
Last year I fished opening weekend on the Thames (Reading stretch) dunno what to do this year, even if I'm on my lake then I feel that I must mark the occasion in some way, perhaps do a Chris Yates and let off a rocket at midnight!

The 16th should be a special date in every carp anglers calender..I know lots of syndicate venues and day ticket lakes are open all year now,but being a member
of a 'syndicate of old' or river angler, that buzz of the 16th drawing in,must be the best... I fished the park last year, and although i didnt step foot
on there til the first week of the season passed by due to crowds,i was soo excited on the week prior to the start watching the fish in close, feeding them
etc... Friends of mine who have car park tickets used to tell me how they'd go down in the back bay and feed Arfur, heather, and dusty,..Something theres no
way you could do if there wasnt a old traditional close season...There storys alone would get me buzzin... I think all venues should close at some point in the
year,if not for the traditional date, then at least the hot months..Ive never really agreed that april and may were the months places should be shut, plus these
are the best times to be out on the bank..I think june, july would be much more beneficial not only to an anglers catch rate, but the safety of the fish,as what
with the calender year seemingly slipping each year, these seem to be the first hot months, and the ones the fish chose to spawn in... Any thoughts..????

Walking around various venues during the close season fish spotting.....sorting out your tackle and dreaming of June 16th to hurry
up and come round...which seemed to take a lifetime!...good times....sadly (for me) that feeling of the glorious 16th is long gone as the venues I fish have
shorter close seasons and open on different dates.
All the best to those that have enjoyed the traditional opening day (today) on the rivers and stillwaters. ![]()

the greatest loss in carp fishing is................ the close season! Much of the magic has gone.....

Even though the close season has been lost on stillaters I think that it'd be nice & appropriate if still water anglers marked the occasion somehow.
It doesn't matter that you'd been fishing the lake for the past few months, the fact it I think we should collectively try to maintain something of it for generations to come. Sounds pointless some of you think? Well as a society we celebrate things that are perhaps no longer relevant, one example being Christmas. How many folk that celebrate this Christian festival to mark the birth of Christ are actually believers and religious? Wouldn't it be great if anglers everywhere on waters perhaps got together for a drink of tea or summat more fizzy at midnight? or even did a Chris Yates and let off a rocket! I hope the closed season on rivers is maintained, it is thought to be more of a factor on those venues to the long term fish stocks. The fact that we've lost it on stillwaters, unlikely to be reinstated too, doesn't mean we shouldn't collectively raise a bankside glass to the 16th June and mark the occasion in some way.

My wife remermbers when i was on Yateley around 1988.....ringing over 20 fellow anglers up and wishing them a good new season....it was June 15th. The thing is
theres so many spring captures(silly season)...so many spawned up weights that its lead to everyone wanting and catching fish far more quickly....leading to a
lack of respect and a wish to rape every water in the process instead of looking at several years in pursuit of their dreams.....i know thats a generalisation
but instead of 5 good months of angling its now an extra 4 months of silly season spring! Unfortunately i myself take more time off in the spring than any
other time of the year.....coz its easier. i used to long for the 16th....watching baiting and then the day came and it was truely special....like ive
said....anglings the worst for its demise!

I suppose one partial solution, Micky, would be to join a water who still observe the closed season, so at least you're not abstaining whilst others
profiteer!
Personally my ideal would be just that, and if I felt the urge to wet a line from 14th March - 16th June, then I could go and fish a day ticket or circuit-esque type water.

I have to agree that there was a certain 'magic' about the build up to June 16th. Meeting in the car park for the draw, sharing a beer or three and
then the self discipline required to not cast out before midnight. Oh happy days.
But.................... Lets face it we all moaned about it, being too long, not covering the carps spawning times, not covering the times when many water birds had their young. And nowadays with the threat of predation from cormorants being faced by many clubs, I can understand why they choose not to have a close season. Now that the box is open, so to speak, I can't see a general return to the old close season, but I do think that there is a case for a short close season of say April and may or even May and June to let the banks recover and to give our quarry a short period where they are not constantly on there guard. $id Watch out for drunken squirrels |

It will never go back....more and more waters will lose the close season and thats the way it is...... i never fished for 2 years on one lake becoz of
morals.....but in the end i realized there was no turning back. Love the extra 3 months angling now but.......things will never be the same.

It will never go backWhich is why it is so crucial that IF (and I hope not) the closed season is ever removed from rivers, then 'we' have to be 100% sure that it is the right decision and not detrimental to the fish stocks, because as you have said Micky, there'd be no going back.
