The EA are planning to sell-off a load of lock keepers cottages on the Thames, this I (and others feel) will compromise the level of service that these guardians of the river can offer.
Lock keepers are not paid an awful lot and are on duty 24-7, the house on the river being part of their salary. The EA in its infinite wisdom (greed?) is planning to sell off these des-res's (like selling the family jewels) for a short term gain and have the lock keepers on call out from elsewhere, which could end up costing more in the long run, (and who contributes a significant chunk to the EA coffers?).
I urge you to have a look at this website, lock keepers do more than just open & close lock gates, not least control water levels in times of flood etc.
